Welcome to the Turtles on the Town Online Auction, the culmination of the Turtles on the Town community arts project. After sea turtle nesting season ended on Southwest Florida beaches last fall, another group of loggerhead sea turtles "hatched." The Community Foundation of Collier County, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida and the United Arts Council of Collier County joined together to present "Turtles on the Town," a community arts project featuring 50 loggerhead sea turtle sculptures in various locations throughout Collier County. The mission of the project was to rally support for the arts, the environment and charitable giving through an engaging community arts project in Collier County. Local residents and visitors were able to see 50 sea turtle sculptures at a public art exhibition from November 2015 through February 2016. The four-foot fiberglass reinforced polyester sea turtle sculptures were embellished by various artists and artisans in all manner of styles and materials including paint, glass, photos, shells and fabric. Net proceeds from this auction will be divided equally among Community Foundation of Collier County, Conservancy of Southwest Florida and United Arts Council to benefit the arts, the environment and charitable giving in the community. Now is your chance to give the turtles permanent homes in our community. We urge you to show your support for this project by bidding at our online auction. Please bid often. Thank you for your generosity. No place for a turtle at your home? Please consider bidding on a turtle to go to a local nonprofit or public space. We will be happy to work with you to find a suitable home. Many thanks to our Online Auction Sponsor, Dirk Soulis Auctions About the Beneficiaries The Community Foundation of Collier County oversees more than 510 funds, collaborates with 400+ nonprofits, holds over $110 million in assets and has distributed more than $88 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and community programs. Through Turtles on the Town, the Foundation will create two funds to distribute grants to nonprofits in Collier County: one for art grants and one for environmental grants. Both funds will be endowed to ensure grants can be given out annually in these two areas. cfcollier.org. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida was founded in 1964 by a small group of concerned citizens fighting to protect the beauty of our region. Through Turtles on the Town, the nonprofit will raise awareness and funds for its Loggerhead Sea Turtle protection and monitoring program, one of the longest running in the country. For more than 32 years, Conservancy biologists have tracked this threatened native species, documenting more than 4,500 nests on Keewaydin Island and ensuring that more than 260,000 hatchlings have had a chance at survival. Funds also will support the Conservancy's Kemp's ridley research and protection program, as well as education programs that reach more than 7,000 students annually, teaching them to respect and protect our native species. conservancy.org. The United Arts Council of Collier County was founded in 1981 and has more than 500 individual and organizational members. The Council focuses attention on the importance of all the arts to our economy and quality of life. It provides arts information to the public, promotes arts education in the schools and serves the local cultural community. The Council is using its expertise to connect artists with the community because a community-wide arts project like Turtles on the Town is a great way to remind everyone of the joy of art. The Council plans to use its portion of the funds to expand education programs for at-risk students and to strengthen the community through the power of the arts. www.uaccollier.com.
